California Gun Laws and Weapon Charges

In the state of California, gun laws are highly regulated. It’s important to understand what is legally allowed when it comes to owning and using firearms, as well as the risks associated with weapon charges. At The Law Office of Robert Little, we specialize in helping individuals facing weapon charges in Rancho Cucamonga and the surrounding areas. Let’s take a look at what you need to know about California gun laws and weapon charges.

Legally Owning Firearms in California

In general, it is illegal for any person convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors to possess a firearm in California. Additionally, California requires all firearms sold through licensed dealers to be purchased with a valid Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC). This certificate must be renewed every five years and can be obtained by taking an FSC test administered by the Department of Justice. Other than that, it is legal for anyone 21 years or older to purchase rifles and shotguns from a licensed dealer without any additional permit from the state government.

Consequences of Weapon Charges

If you are convicted of illegally possessing a firearm or other weapon in California, you may face severe consequences ranging from fines to jail time. For example, if you are convicted of misdemeanor possession of a loaded firearm not registered to you in any database, you may face up to one year in county jail and/or fines up to $1,000. If you are convicted of felony possession of an assault weapon, however, penalties could include 16 months–3 years in state prison and/or fines up to $10,000.
